Not when you're writing a paper on biobutanol produced from biomass producing equivalent power (more torque) in an internal combustion engine with none of the negatives of ethanol. 95% reduction in exhaust emissions doesn't hurt either. However, I'll have a section on its development in the motorsport industry. |

Is the amount of energy/volume the same as ethanol and where can you purchase it? |

It's actually an alcohol based fuel that is less corrosive than ethanol and has nearly the same specific energy as gasoline.
Gasoline 115 000 BTU/gal
Butanol 105 000 BTU/gal
Ethanol 85 000 BTU/gal
Therefore, it's nearly a 1:1 replacement for gasoline. The EPA has authorized it's use to be blended, much like ethanol is right now (most of the pump gas in the US is E10). The trouble is finding ways to avoid producing it from petroleum and use waste biomass instead. It's not that readily available for the time being, but to give you an idea of its potential, BP has invested heavily in its research. Heck, it's good enough to power the Dyson Racing Lola Mazda in the American LeMans Series. It's only listed as 86-octane, but cranks out 500bhp from a 2.0L inline-4 turbo.

We're off this coming week. I have a question... last year I drove a van for my daughter's exchange trip and we parked along a harbourfront park with a railway going parallel to the road and the waterfront right the middle. It was only a block or two walk to Old Montreal... there was some sort of Pirate Exhibit going on nearby. Can anyone tell the me the name of that park? I was just following the other vans and buses and so I didn't really get to pay attention to where I was going.
I'd like to take the family back there, and maybe to the Biodome. Gotta love those penguins.
Fwiw, if anyone knows the name of the sugarbush just east of the Ontario border (about 5 miles off the highway) I'd hug you...or not hug you depending on your preference... _________________ For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three... |
